Medicare Website Redesign

I was responsible for web design, information architecture, image production, usability testing, and some project management.

The Challenge

Highmark needed a fast redesign of their Medicare website. They gave us just 5 days to complete a detailed information architecture, screen designs, and present them to the client.

The Solution

After presenting the initial templates to the client, we conducted usability tests to evaluate both the look and feel, as well as the functionality. The tests went well, and we moved forward with the implementation.

Despite some design compromises due to tight timelines and stringent browser requirements, we managed to deliver a site that was an improvement over the previous version. The redesign allowed the client to maintain their site independently, bypassing long development cycles. Overall, the stakeholders were satisfied with the project.

Key Improvements

One notable interaction involved selecting a county to view available Medicare plans, a mandated requirement for users qualifying for Medicare. Previously, a modal window forced users to make this decision upfront, creating a barrier to site navigation.

We moved this interaction closer to the relevant information about the plans. This change kept the necessary functionality while making the site more user-friendly, turning the selection process into a helpful guide rather than an obstacle.

Outcome

The redesign successfully enhanced the user experience, made the site more maintainable for the client, and met the project requirements within a tight deadline.
